SECOND GRADE SCENE

Reading - Students should show mastery of high frequency irregular words, prefixes, suffixes, compound words, base words, and inflectional endings.  Students will produce summaries of text, identify expository and narrative texts, read fairy tales and other genres.  Students will continue using graphic aids and demonstrate learning through various projects.  Students will continue to work on increasing fluency, comprehension, and accuracy in reading.

Math - We will continue to work on addition facts plus addition with regrouping, temperature, problem solving, counting money, telling time, probability, reading graphs and charts, beginning multiplication and division situations, and measuring using appropriate tools
Science and Social Studies - We continue our trip around the world by making stops in the Europe, Arctic and Antarctica. We will explore the landforms, landmarks, animals, cultures, traditions, holidays and so much more.  In Science, we have kicked off our weekly science lab with various projects.  We've experimented with oxidation with apples and how preservatives affect mold growth in food.  We're excited to do much more in the future!

Upcoming Events:

Tips for Parents:

Read with your child every night for at least 20 minutes.  Ask your child questions and have your child justify their answers.  Find books, magazines, or poetry that really sparks your child's interests, make it a special time in your day!

Every second grader received a set of addition and subtraction flash cards from their teacher.  Please flash these with your child weekly.  By the end of second grade, every student should know their sums to 18 with automaticity.

Parents and teachers, together, can help our students achieve and surpass their goals!
